Little River Clean Up and Celebration Day
El Portal and Oakland Grove Neighbors will be hosting the next “Little River Clean Up and Celebration Day”
DATE: SATURDAY MARCH 8, 2014
TIME:
8:30 AM – River Serenade
9:00 AM – 11:30 AM River bank clean up
12:00 PM – 1:30 PM Lunch and community information & planning discussion onshore
WHERE: Start at the South Florida Water Management District Control structure/dam by 82nd Street End same area.
WHAT:
We will begin the clean up with a river serenade by La Fortuna Muse Ensemble.
We need volunteers on land and in canoes and kayaks do the cleanup (mainly of bottles and plastics wedged into the banks of the river) and talk to people they meet along the way about the history and importance of caring for the river.
We also need the support of neighbors who live along the river — river dwellers will get a flyer and balloon in advance and will be asked to place the balloon riverside if they would like to cooperate with people in canoes and kayaks on the water. If needed they could put canoe overflow collected trash in their own trash collection cans.
From noon until the event ends around 1:30, we will have lunch and a community information & planning event. This will cover issues raised by storm surge and sea level rise risk connected to the river for our immediate area and what is being done about it. We will also learn how events in the history of the river going back to Tequesta times and then to the draining of the Everglades can help us make the case for why our communities are so important for the future of Miami-Dade County.
Artist Joseph Vasile will work with students during the day to repaint our foot bridge and create the Peace Flags Installation that will be shared later in the month at the Rosa Parks Museum in Montgomery, Alabama.
