4th Annual Armed Forces Day 5k Run/Walk

Join us for Our Annual 5K in honor of our Military on ARMED FORCES DAY. Event starts at 8:00 AM at El Portal Village Hall, 500 NE 87th Street and will follow a beautiful winding course through historical El Portal Village. The Run/Walk is open to everyone at all levels of fitness and the Course/Safety will be supported by El Portal Police Departments finest officers. Health Fair

Barry University School of Nursing is hosting it's first health fair in El Portal! The Class of 2012 is offering free blood presure screening, blood glucose screening, vision and hearing tests, nutritional information, plus more.... Urban Paradise Guild - El Portal Ch.

Dear Neighbors: Now that the weather will be cooler, the Urban Paradise Guild El Portal Chapter will begin our monthly meetings. Our next event is set for September 25, 2011 from 9:00 AM -11:00 AM and we will be transporting some of our plants from our local El Portal home nursery's to our UPG Partner nursery at the Montgomery Botanical Center located at 11901 Old Cutler Road. Volunteers will get a behind the scenes visit to the Montgomery Botanical Center. Montgomery began life in the mid 1920's as the home of Colonel Montgomery, an botany enthusiast and collector. It is now operated by a private Foundation. David Fairchild worked at Montgomery, and the Foundation played a pivotal role in the creation of Fairchild Tropical Botanical Gardens. Families/kids/seniors are welcome!

The Urban Paradise Guild along with the Village of El Portal is hosting a tree giveaway for Sunday, January 30th (9:30 am – 12:30 pm) to give away native plants, possibly veggies and educational information about how to care for them. This event will be hosted by village residents for village residents. Florence Chamberlin, Nancy Dowson (local realtor) and Kim Flowers (local architect) will be available for questions.The informational session will include valuable tips on how trees/landscaping can add to your property values at basically no cost. There is no cost to attend the workshop.

Village Election for Mayor and Council

The Mayor and Village Council are elected every two years in the even years. Qualifying period for the Village Election is from July 30, 2010 through on August 20, 2010. If you are interested and qualify, you may pickup a package in the Village Clerk's office. All Packets must be fully completed and handed to the village clerk by noon on August 20,2010.

Armed Forces Day/5K walk/run

Many Americans celebrate Armed Forces Day annually on the third Saturday of May. It is a day to pay tribute to men and women who serve the United States’ armed forces. Armed Forces Day is also part of Armed Forces Week, which begins on the second Saturday of May. Registration is between 7:30am and 8:30am. Walk starts at 8:30am. Easter Egg Hunt 2010

El Portal residents couldn't have asked for better Saturday morning weather! Sunshine, little to no cloud coverage and So many smiling faces! Councilperson Cubillos-Pace organized the activities that were led by El Portal Police Officers. After the egg hunt, the children participated in an egg coloring contest and a game of Simon says.

State of the Village Address 2010

The State of the Village Address was attended by many and enjoyed by all. Soloist Shira Ridley gifted the audience with her beautiful voice and performances by Step 4 Life had the crowd dancing with them. The honorable Mayor Joyce A. Davis delivered a well accepted speech and the villagers were happy to hear the good news. It definitely "Exceeded Expectations". El Portal Police officers and residents served delicious food and drinks side by side. All photographs were taken by Forrest Bowen.
February Senior Luncheon

Delicious food was served by our officers and good times were enjoyed by all who attended! Just take a look at all the smiling faces in our photos taken by Forrest Bowen. This month our Senior Luncheon had a very important historical theme. Here's a little history lesson: "Black History Month is the successor to Negro History Week which was initiated on February 12, 1926 by Carter G. Woodson. Woodson an African American historian, author and journalist chose February because it included the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass, whom he believed had significantly impacted the lives of Black Americans." Toys for Tots 2009

The Village of El Portal's Mayor, staff and Police department brought joy to children from the local neighborhood. Smiling faces were everywhere as Chief Eugene Morales played the part of Santa. Mayor Joyce A. Davis and several of the police officers handed out toys as the children eagerly awaited their turn in line outside Village Hall.

Quite a few of our beloved seniors came out to celebrate Thanksgiving lunch with us on November 25th. Ms. Claudia's students helped greet guests and the Village of El Portal Police Department helped serve the delicious meal. Good food and times were enjoyed by all who attended.
